Unions call for a national Anti-Corruption Commission

Apr 4, 2016Update

Australian unions are demanding the Turnbull Government establish a national Anti-Corruption Commission with the power to investigate corruption in all areas of our society.

In light of the world-wide bribery scandal involving major Australian companies, International anti-corruption experts have urged Australia to act. Fairfax media reported last week that, “officials believe that under-resourcing, ineffective laws and competing priorities between the federal police and corporate watchdog ASIC are a factor in the failure to resolve many cases”.

This has come to light just as the electoral commission has revealed the Liberal Party was the beneficiary of 73 donations illegally funnelled from wealthy individuals and corporations. (source: The Australian)

If true, the corruption revealed last week is a threat to our democracy.

Parliament has been recalled on 18 April so that Malcolm Turnbull can try and force the Senate to approve setting up the Australian Building Construction Commission, which is targeting the rights of construction workers to be in a union, to have representation and will force workers to answer questions about their union activities or face jail time. We demand that instead of pursuing laws that remove civil liberties from one million workers, Malcolm Turnbull act to establish a National Anti-Corruption Commission to shine a light into all areas of society including business, sport, finance and politics.

Australian Unions are hoping to have signatures from workers right across the country to so that the petition can be presented when Parliament is recalled on 18 April.
