Sydney Trains: Training & Assessing Update

Nov 17, 2021Update

The Locomotive Division would like to advise Sydney Trains members that training and assessing of drivers and trainee drivers will recommence after having been paused in July due to Covid-19.

Locomotive Division Representatives and HSRs have engaged with Sydney Trains through all available forums to resolve issues relating to training within a Covid 19 context.

Member’s health, safety, and operational concerns related to:

• The impact of mandatory masks in-cab while delivering training. Including impacts on  the discernibility of time sensitive or safety critical communication.

• Sydney Trains’ position that a mask (the identified control) may be removed to deliver critical communications without any additional controls.

Following Transport for NSW’s mandatory vaccination policy announcement, a meeting of the Driver Training Working Group (COVID-19) was held where it was agreed only those who are fully vaccinated would return to training and masks would no longer be mandatory in cab for trainees.

With members’ health and safety concerns finally addressed, a staged return to initial employment training has been developed with other elements of driver upskilling and “return to authorisation” to also recommence.

The Locomotive Division would like to acknowledge the patience of members affected by the Covid-19 training pause and welcome members back into the workplace.

Members will continue to be informed of any changes or further developments as they occur. Please contact your local delegate or head office for more information if needed.
