Adelaide’s train and tram services set to be privatised
The South Australian Government has revealed plans to privatise the operation of Adelaide’s train and tram services.
It says it will still own and control “rail assets”, including trains, trams, tracks and stations, and will continue to set the fare price for travel. However, many services will be impacted and the Transport Minister cannot guarantee that drivers will be able to keep their jobs.
“This is just another example of how governments work. They look to privatise public assets at the expense of the public and workers ,” says Loco Division Secretary Bob Hayden.
“They cannot guarantee that the new train system will be efficient or reliable. We hear the same spiel every time but the real impact is on the commuters and drivers who lose out while the government simply moves on to the next disaster.”
