Whale sculpture catches crashed Dutch metro train
The driver of an empty train has made a lucky escape after thanks to a fortuitously placed art installation.
A metro train in Spijkenisse, Netherlands, crashed through a barrier at the end of the tracks just before midnight.
Instead of plummeting 10m into the water below, the train became caught on the Whale Tails sculpture at De Akkers metro station.
The sculpture, created by architect and artist Maarten Struijs and erected in the water at the end of the tracks in 2002, was thankfully well-shaped to balance the train enough for the driver to escape to solid ground.
