Asbestos Consultative Committee Update
The Locomotive Division would like to update Members on the progress of the Asbestos Consultative Committee. The Committee was established following the discovery of Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) in Sydney Trains rolling stock and is made up of RTBU Representatives, Sydney and NSW Trains HSRs, external workplace hygienists (WSP) and business representatives from the relevant divisions.
The Committee serves as the dedicated forum for dealing with all asbestos issues relating to Train Crew and rolling stock and is the body responsible for implementing the agreed process for testing and remediation of ACM as first utilised on C and K type rolling stock last year.
Electric Fleet interior testing and remediation has occurred on C, K, S and V set rolling stock with exterior testing soon to be completed. Once complete a scoping exercise will be conducted in regards to extending testing to Oscar and Tangara type rolling stock. Testing of the Diesel Fleet is ongoing with XPT and 48 Class rolling stock testing complete and Endeavour, Explorer and Hunter sets still outstanding.
Written assurances are also being obtained from relevant businesses regarding all current and future Public Private Partnership rolling stock ensuring that no ACM is used in construction of these sets.
Locomotive Division Representatives raised concerns regarding the current standard for inspection of ACM dictating 5 yearly periodical assessments. Representatives believed this standard, which applies to stationary structures, was insufficient and inappropriate for dynamic environments like the Drivers Cab. Motivated by this concern the Locomotive Division campaigned to have assets re-inspected for potential deterioration of ACM more frequently. Agreement was reached to have a sample of each rolling stock type re-inspected at 3, 6, 12 and 24 month increments to assess any potential deterioration of ACM and ensure continued effective ACM management. The recently conducted 3 month testing resulted in no presence ACM dust and no signs of deterioration.
Medical assessments and health monitoring continues to be undertaken for those who have requested it. Members experiencing delays in this area are encouraged to seek resolution through their Line Manager.
Members will continue to be informed as testing progresses and advised of any issues arising from the Asbestos Consultative Committee. Should you have any questions please contact your Local Delegate or Locomotive Division Head Office.
