Train whistles blowing…but not at tunnels
The sweet tweet of a train whistle may soon be a thing of the past, with Sydney Trains looking at removing the requirement for drivers to sound their train whistle when entering or exiting tunnels.
The company is proposing to introduce the “no whistle” policy broadly rather than amend the current rule to allow for non-whistling at the 16 tunnel locations. The move will apply to all trains operating in the areas bounded by Macarthur, Waterfall, Emu Plains and Berowra. Initially, it is proposed to commence with Edgecliff tunnel as well as the Arglyle St portal at Circular Quay.
Each tunnel will be risk assessed prior to implementation with Loco Division and WHS participation. Members will be advised of the changes as they occur.
