QLD takes crossing safety to a new level

Queensland is currently trialling a number of solutions to make open level crossings in the state safer.

Among the methods being trailed is the ‘pixie system’ – an emergency signal intercepting device that breaks into vehicle radio signals and warns drivers to stop as they approach level crossings.

The Pixie system is being trailed alongside a solar-powered lighting and signage system that would not be affected by power outages.

In the first six months of 2012 there were 213 reported near misses on the Queensland Rail network, highlighting a clear need to improve safety at the crossings.

The trails are currently underway in various parts of regional Queensland and if successful, will be rolled out throughout the state.
