From footplate to pedal: calling all cycling drivers

Jul 15, 2013News

With the new focus on driver health many drivers are looking at news ways of keeping fit, and PN Kalgoolie driver Terry Hannan may have just the answer: cycling.

Terry is behind a cycling network – Railriders – being developed for train drivers interested in cycling.

The network would provide drivers with information on upcoming events, equipment and training advice and group rides.

If you’re interested in getting involved in an industry cycling network, contact Terry at thandkh@bigpond.net.au or phone 0415144388 with your name, email, address, phone, company division and type of cycling you’re interested in.

Terry is also organising a ride in February 2014 that may be of particular interest to drivers as it follows old rail formations – and as a result, it’s not too hard.

The first 3 days are on the Alps to Ocean trail from Mt Cook to Oamaru. You pass by majestic lakes, mountains, and then by the Waitaki River. http://www.nzcycletrail.com/alps-2-ocean-cycle-trail

At the end of day three we drive via farm roads to Middle march to spend days 4 and 5 riding up the Otago Central Rail Trail. Day six is down the Roxburgh Gorge Trail from Alexander to Roxburgh http://nzbybike.com/roxburgh-gorge-trail/

Day 7 is the Roxburgh to Lawrence Heritage Cycle Trail – http://www.nzcycletrail.com/clutha-gold-trail.
