ATSB releases damning report on coal train derailment
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau recently released its report into the derailment of Pacific National coal train MB520 on 28th August 2015.
The report highlighted failures in Pacific National’s maintenance program and revealed the company knew of the problem before the derailment but took no immediate action to inspect the wheel.
So much for the company’s ‘home safely everyday’ motto. It would appear it was only by chance everyone got home in one piece on 28th August.
The RTBU will be following up this report with Pacific National. Members should ensure their own safety by making sure all safety checks are carried out and standards are adhered to. If you have any concerns at all, please let your HSR and the union know immediately.
