Secretary’s wrap

May 27, 2016Secretary's run-down

Our Federal politicians are currently zig-zagging across the country, shouting about why they are best equipped to lead our country.

Transport is getting a little bit of airtime, with all parties clearly realising that improving our transport networks is important to voters.

Among the ALP’s recent commitments are the establishment of a High Speed Rail Authority to look into the development of a high speed rail link between Brisbane and Melbourne, via Sydney and Canberra; a $175 million investment in unclogging the freight rail bottlenecks at Port Botany; as well as a plan to get moving on key projects like the Airport Rail to Badgerys Creek.

The Liberal Party’s infrastructure policies to date are more focused on roads, however there is commitment to Inland Rail. And in what seems to be an indication as to the Turnbull Government’s transport priorities, the current Prime Minister recently announced $6.5 million to upgrade the Puffing Billy tourist rail – just $3.5 million less than his commitment to the Melbourne Metro. I love the Puffing Billy, but seriously…?

I trust you’ll enjoy this edition of Loco Express.

Stay safe on the tracks,

Bob Hayden
Loco Division Secretary
