Australian Ghan railway celebrates 90 years of operation

Aug 1, 2019Update

The historic Ghan railway in Australia will be celebrating 90 years on Sunday. There will be a special service for the anniversary taking over 200 passengers from Adelaide to Darwin over 3 days.

The rail is proudly named after the Afghan camel trains in South Australia in the 19th century. The original line to Alice Springs was used in World War II for transporting soldiers and supplies from Adelaide and at the time, it was seen as the largest civil engineering project second to the Snowy Mountains Scheme.

In 2001, the line was extended to what it is today, an Adelaide to Darwin service mainly used for tourism and as a reminder of our nation’s proud rail history.
